Why Perform Ear Cropping Surgery for Dogs

Doberman (detailed introduction)
I believe everyone has heard about ear cropping surgery for dogs. Most dogs of certain specific breeds need to undergo ear cropping, such as Dobermans, Giant Schnauzers, and so on. However, many owners strongly oppose this surgery. Why it is necessary for dogs to have ear cropping has always been a question in their minds, so let's take a look at some reasons why dogs undergo ear cropping.
It is impossible to verify exactly when ear cropping surgery first became popular. But one thing we do know is that humans initially performed ear cropping purely based on practical purposes.
For example, Dobermans, as a working dog breed, are required to have a noble temperament, an alert expression, and a spirited appearance. Dobermans that have undergone ear cropping clearly better embody these characteristics than those that have not. Therefore, Dobermans are generally required to have ear cropping. And for breeds like Schnauzers and some terriers, because their ear canal structures are relatively complex and filled with stiff coarse hair that does not fall out, it often irritates their delicate ear canal skin and is prone to bacterial infections causing many ear diseases. Thus, for these types of breeds, people also generally perform ear cropping surgery.
Ear cropping today: Most ear cropping is intended to make dogs look more dignified and beautiful. In DOG SHOWs, any dog breed that requires ear cropping according to breed standards must have the surgery done before participating in competitions, to showcase the unique charm of the breed. However, for most families, a PET DOG serving as a companion dog has no strong necessity for ear cropping. If there is no special need, having a floppy-eared Doberman or Schnauzer is also perfectly acceptable.
