Standards for Identifying Tibetan Mastiffs Mistakenly Taken for Great Pyrenees
Great Pyrenees

Many people confuse Tibetan Mastiffs with Great Pyrenees and Tibetan dogs. Because pure Tibetan Mastiffs are extremely rare, some Mastiff enthusiasts may have never seen a genuine Tibetan Mastiff; some may have seen ordinary white Tibetan dogs or Great Pyrenees; some have even only heard legends about Tibetan Mastiffs from others, which leads to widespread hearsay. However, the formation of these theories is closely related to personal experience and vested interests.

  A Origin of Tibetan Mastiffs

Tibetan Mastiffs originate from Tibetan Mastiffs (detailed introduction), not a different genetic lineage, like Jin Si Mastiffs or Iron Hugging Golden Mastiffs; they are just different color variants arising from color gene mutations.

  B Tibetan Mastiff Standards

The standards for Tibetan Mastiffs are the same as those for Tibetan Mastiffs, with the most fundamental, typical, and primary physiological and physical criteria being: (1) lion-type (2) loose skin under the neck (3) drooping eyes and mouth (4) obvious beast-like face (5) height of males over 65cm, females over 55cm, weight of males over 50kg, females over 35kg.

  C Misunderstandings About Tibetan Mastiffs

  (1) Some believe Tibetan Mastiffs are unfathomable, mystifying them or adding many unfounded legends. Actually, the difference is only in coat color series. Because Tibetan Mastiffs are extremely rare (rarity increases value), they appear precious.

  (2) Some think Tibetan Mastiffs are less fierce than Mastiffs of other colors, which is very one-sided. Maybe they have seen few Tibetan Mastiffs or not pure ones. Since individual Mastiffs vary, their fierceness can differ, and Mastiffs of other colors can also vary in fierceness.

  (3) Some speculate that mating Tibetan Mastiffs with other colored Mastiffs produces about 50% Tibetan Mastiff offspring, which is unscientific. Since Tibetan Mastiff's color genes are more stable relative to other colors, crossing them results in no more than 20% white offspring.

  (4) Some believe Tibetan Mastiffs have unstable inheritance with a low white offspring ratio. Actually, Tibetan Mastiffs have relatively simple and stable color inheritance. As long as both male and female Tibetan Mastiffs have more than 60% white bloodline, 100% of their offspring will be white.

  (5) Many confuse Tibetan Mastiffs with Great Pyrenees and Tibetan dogs. Due to the extreme rarity of pure Tibetan Mastiffs, some enthusiasts may not have met genuine ones; some have seen only ordinary white Tibetan dogs or Great Pyrenees; some have only heard legends from others, often repeating hearsay. These theories are closely linked to personal experience and interests. With a scientific attitude and honest recognition, it's clear: From the beginning, Tibetan Mastiffs had no separate varieties like Tibetan Mastiffs of different colors (golden, iron, etc.). Their most original colors were wolf gray, apricot brown, greyish yellow to brown. Over thousands of years, through natural and artificial breeding, these color gene clusters stabilized, and red, yellow, white coat colors resulted from mutations of the original pigment gene. Tibetan Mastiffs only appear precious because their mutation rate is low and they inherit recessively, so their white offspring appears unstably and rarely. Therefore, pure white Tibetan Mastiffs are extremely rare premium specimens. In the current society, driven by market economy and high profits, some dog traders pass off ordinary white Tibetan dogs or Great Pyrenees as "Tibetan Mastiffs" for sale, completely deceiving people, failing to see the true proud look of Tibetan Mastiffs, thus misleading the true image of Tibetan Mastiffs.
