Training Dogs Not to Randomly Chew or Carry Objects
Dogs are sometimes naturally naughty and like to carry certain things around. Nowadays, many dog owners love their pets very much. When puppies chew or carry objects around the house, owners often do not stop them and even find it amusing. In fact, these behaviors are unacceptable mistakes for household and companion dogs. Imagine if this becomes a habit; the dog chewing on furniture all day or carrying things it should not, even dirty items, in front of you—how would you feel?
Therefore, it is necessary to firmly stop these wrong behaviors of the dog. But methods must be appropriate. For example, if the dog is found chewing furniture or carrying shoes or socks and torn rags, harshly hitting the dog will not correct the bad behavior but rather damage the relationship between the dog and owner. The correct education and training method is to leash the dog, take it near objects the dog likes to chew or carry, loosen the leash to let the dog play freely, and as soon as the dog tries to chew or carry these objects, immediately give the command "No" while lightly tapping the dog's mouth or sharply pulling the leash to stop it. If the dog does not chew the objects, reward it with the command "Good" and petting on the head and neck. After repeated training, the dog will gradually change this bad habit and no longer randomly chew or carry objects.
Of course, for puppies aged 4 to 5 months, this training method is not suitable because puppies need to chew during teething. You can provide some coarse pig or cow bones or dog chew toys for the puppy to chew on to restrict it from chewing other items. (Source: PetsZone)
