The Chow Chow is not very friendly to strangers

The Chow Chow always gives an impression of being silly and looks very honest, so it is hard for us to associate it with working dogs. This breed originated in Tibet, China, and has a relatively long history. Later, they were brought to the UK and improved, consistently serving the role of guarding temples.

Although we think that today's Chow Chow is always lazy, they are also a type of working dog and can be described as multifunctional all-around dogs. Originally, Chow Chows were used for hunting, guarding, and pulling. That’s why we say despite the silly look of Chow Chows, they are actually not very easy to get along with.

Chow Chows have keen smell and sensitive hunting instincts, good at catching prey like Mongolian fowl. Their gait is fast, powerful, and full of energy. However, today's Chow Chows are mainly kept as companion dogs, so their physical skills definitely differ from the past. Additionally, we usually believe that large dogs are more intimidating, so it’s less likely for them to be kept as guard dogs.

Moreover, Chow Chows have a strong sense of territory. If strangers or unfamiliar dogs disturb them, they may show unfriendly emotions. In fact, the Chow Chow is still a relatively good guard dog. Although they are not very friendly to strangers, they are gentle and loyal to their owners. Another feature is that Chow Chows do not deliberately seek affection, so sometimes they may appear cold.

Though the Chow Chow is not large in size, we can see that their limbs are relatively compact and sturdy. Another obvious characteristic of this breed is its unique blue tongue. Also, this breed may be prone to skin problems. Therefore, regular care is a must, including grooming the coat frequently and fully drying after bathing without being careless, or else you will suffer the consequences.
