Dog urine has a strong odor, and the longer it is left uncleaned, the more likely the smell will linger, making removal more difficult later. When we notice the dog urinating randomly, it is important to reprimand promptly and clean up as soon as possible to prevent odor residue.

1. Improve the Dog's Random Urination Behavior

First, we need to correct the dog's random urination behavior. If it continues, it will be impossible to get rid of the smell at home. If your dog is grown but still has indoor elimination problems, extend the time it stays outside. When indoors, keep them in places with hardwood floors and absorbent pee pads. Always respond consistently and scold severely every time you see the dog urinating randomly.

Remove carpets and other soiled items from the floor. The urine smell may come from these items, so it is best to wash or discard them to eliminate the odor. Use enzyme cleaners to wash affected clothes and bedding. Besides common cleaners, you can also wash with large amounts of baking soda.

If the urine has soaked into the carpet padding, consider replacing the carpet. Untimely cleaned mats are hard to deodorize, or spraying some freshener on the carpet may help, but prolonged use can affect the dog's sense of smell.

Additionally, buying a handheld blacklight (UV light) is useful. Blacklights allow you to find old urine stains and pinpoint targets. You can also purchase enzyme cleaners, which are best for cleaning new urine stains but can be used on all stains. Such products are available in supermarkets, pet stores, and online.

2. Remove New Urine Stains

First use paper towels to absorb as much urine as possible. Try to clean the area quickly after the pet urinates to reduce urine seeping into the carpet padding. If the urine is on the carpet, spray enzyme cleaner on the spot. Cover the entire urine area as thoroughly as possible. Follow the product instructions and let it sit to neutralize the odor slowly.

Spray clean water on the urine stain, then use a vacuum water extractor to remove the dirty water. If you do not have a vacuum water extractor, you can use paper towels to absorb the dirty water. But do not spray too much water on the urine stain, as puddles can cause mold growth under the carpet.

Sprinkle some baking soda on the urine spot for extra deodorizing effect. Let the stain air dry, and try to keep the room ventilated so the carpet dries faster and the odor is removed. After drying, vacuum up the baking soda. If there is still urine odor, repeat these steps as necessary.

3. Clean Old Urine Stains

Turn on the blacklight. Take several sheets of paper, and mark the stained areas. Turn off all the lights in the house. It is best to do this at night to see stains more easily. When you see white urine stains under the blacklight, mark the spots. Turn the room lights back on and clean each marked stain to remove the odor.

Move furniture aside to access all wall and carpet stains. You can wash urine-soaked furniture outdoors with a mixture of baking soda and water. Spray enzyme cleaner on untreated spots. These are usually old stains that cannot be found easily.

Spray a layer of distilled white vinegar on cleaned areas. This method is most effective after the dog no longer urinates indoors; otherwise, the strong ammonia smell may cause the dog to treat these places as new toilets. For urine stains on white carpets or rugs, you can spray a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide (2:1 ratio) on the stain. Hydrogen peroxide may fade colored carpets, so this method should only be used on white carpets.

The key to completely solving this problem is to address the dog's elimination behavior, then ensure good ventilation and timely cleaning of urine or feces.
