The Tibetan Mastiff is a unique dog breed in our country, rich in ethnic cultural connotations. People from many countries and regions around the world are enthusiastic about raising Tibetan Mastiffs, and the Tibetan Mastiff market is very active. However, due to the disorderly development and excessive exploitation of the Tibetan Mastiff market in recent years, genuine Tibetan Mastiffs have become extremely scarce. Stories of Tibetan Mastiffs costing millions of yuan are repeatedly told, and it is truly said that "a thousand gold easy to get, one mastiff hard to find, hundreds of mastiffs can be seen, but top quality is rare." Therefore, some unscrupulous people exploit the lack of knowledge about purebred Tibetan Mastiffs and breed standards to deceive people and make money. Hence, to purchase a superior Tibetan Mastiff, one must first have a certain understanding of the Tibetan Mastiff's habits and breed standards. Below are some considerations for choosing a Tibetan Mastiff.

Tibetan Mastiff Selection Standards

  I. Tibetan Mastiff Standards
A good Tibetan Mastiff should have a dignified expression, almond-shaped or triangular eyes, and eyelids should naturally fit against the eyeball. The upper lip of the Tibetan Mastiff should fit tightly against the canine palate, slightly drooping, while the lower lip should not droop. The Tibetan Mastiff's height should be between 60~72 cm, and weight between 45~70 kg. The coat color should primarily be black, with allowable yellowish-brown coloration appearing above the eyes, on the lower legs, the inner side of the tail, and muzzle. White spots on the chest and slight whiteness on the paws are permitted, as is a yellowish-brown patch above the eyes (four eyes); other colors such as yellow (reddish brown), white, and wolf gray Tibetan Mastiffs can be chosen according to personal preference.
  II. Tibetan Mastiff Evaluation
As a unique canine breed native to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in our country, Tibetan Mastiffs should possess traits of toughness, bravery, nobility, and confidence, which are the basic qualities of an excellent Tibetan Mastiff. An excellent Tibetan Mastiff, in conformity with breed characteristics, should be physically robust, well-proportioned, muscular, with lively eyes, strong bite, normally developed limbs, dense and shiny coat, free from structural defects or diseases. The gait should be strong and powerful, light and flexible. At a fast pace, the hind legs show a unique dragging-step style. From the front, limbs on the same side should align on the same line when walking; from the side, front and rear limbs should cross when moving. Whether at a slow or fast pace, the Tibetan Mastiff should look towards the owner or forward, not elsewhere. Dewclaws should be removed when the Tibetan Mastiff is young.
An excellent Tibetan Mastiff must also have superior lineage, namely: pure bloodline, complete pedigree records, and a good family breeding history. These can be confirmed through bloodline certificates, chip identification technology, and DNA testing certificates for the individual Tibetan Mastiff.

  III. Choosing a Tibetan Mastiff
When purchasing an adult Tibetan Mastiff, you can refer to the Tibetan Mastiff evaluation standards for selection. The author suggests purchasing puppies aged 3-5 months; at this stage, Tibetan Mastiffs are not overly fierce and can quickly harmonize with their owners, facilitating the establishment of a close relationship. Moreover, when buying, you should understand the qualities of the puppy's parents and grandparents to confirm whether the puppy you purchase truly comes from Tibetan Mastiffs. When selecting a puppy, carefully observe whether the puppy's eyes are bright (do not buy if eye discharge or moist, tearful circles appear), if the nose is moist, the anus area is clean, mental state is good, walking is normal, appetite is good, and body condition is proper.
When purchasing, inquire about vaccination and deworming status to avoid buying dogs in the incubation period of diseases. Generally, deworming medication is given orally when puppies are 30 days old, the first five-in-one (or six-in-one) vaccine is injected at 50 days (after weaning), then a second injection 15 days later, followed by a third vaccine 30 days after that to complete the puppy vaccination. Once all these conditions are met, it means you have selected a superior and healthy puppy.
