How to Stop Cats from Picking Up and Eating Random Things

Cats are pets with a very strong curiosity. As the saying goes, “curiosity killed the cat,” serious curiosity is not a good thing for pet cats. In daily life, cats often pick up and eat random things out of curiosity, which can often be fatal. Therefore, it is necessary to stop them in time and train cats to learn how to refuse food, preventing the habit of picking up and eating random things.

First, during the process of raising a pet cat, you should train it from a young age to develop the habit of refusing food. Many cats have a habit of being addicted to some non-edible foreign objects. For example, potted plants at home, yarn balls, rubber bands, cardboard boxes, other snacks, and so on. After cats catch these things, they will scratch with their paws and often use their mouths to investigate them. For owners, once they find cats showing such exploratory behavior, they should stop it immediately, such as loudly scolding to make the cat pause the stealing action. Then take the cat away from these “foreign objects” and prevent it from eating them again.

Second, in daily life, owners should try to keep cats away from these “foreign objects.” For example, when at home, it is best to place potted plants where cats cannot reach them, and snacks should be stored in boxes. Yarn balls, paper clips, etc. should be stored properly so cats cannot find them. In addition, leftover food should be discarded promptly to prevent cats from stealing and eating it. When outdoors, cats should wear a leash to prevent them from picking up discarded food on the roadside, avoiding food poisoning or ingestion of toxic substances.

To quickly stop cats from picking up and eating random things, the best methods are loud scolding or directly pulling the leash. Both methods can immediately alert the cat, making it wary and unwilling to eat random things it picks up right away. During this process, owners can effectively control the cat and keep it completely away from these “harmful substances” to ensure the cat does not eat random things and to protect its health.
