With the continuous improvement of people's living standards, some economically well-off individuals choose to raise animals, such as dogs, cats, or birds. Today, the editor will introduce a kind of adorable bird and teach everyone how to train young birds to recognize their owner! Let's take a look!

What are young birds?

Young birds are juvenile birds that cannot live independently. There are precocial and altricial young birds. Precocial young birds have their eyes open as soon as they hatch, are covered with dense feathers, and once their down feathers dry, they can immediately follow their parents to find food. Examples of precocial birds include chicken, duck, goose, and wild goose young birds. Altricial young birds just hatched have underdeveloped bodies, closed eyes, little or no feathers, sometimes completely naked, with weak legs and feet, lacking the ability to live independently. They need to stay in the nest and be fed by parent birds; these are called altricial birds. Young pigeons and swallows are altricial birds. Altricial birds usually live in concealed and safe old nests. Parent birds are often fierce and can protect their young, so the survival rate of altricial birds is significantly higher than that of precocial birds. For this reason, altricial birds usually lay more eggs per clutch than precocial birds. One phenomenon worth noting is imprinting! Imprinting is an important form of learning for all newborn animals. It helps these defenseless young animals stick closely to their parents, ensuring their food supply. Animals treat the first moving object they see as their mother and imitate its behavior. This is a special imprint learning in animal behavior science, also called primary imprinting.

How to train young birds to recognize their owner?

As mentioned earlier, we must be beside the young birds when they hatch, or be the first person they see. Coupled with feeding and protecting them regularly afterward, they will naturally recognize us. However, we also need to clean the young birds’ home regularly and provide help within our ability. If the young birds get injured, we must detect it in time and take meticulous care. This will help young birds recognize their owner faster! Additionally, we can conduct after-the-fact training, but this requires some time. We need to often make eye contact with the young birds to deeply imprint our appearance in their minds!
