1. Ear canal is relatively clean. If the Shetland Sheepdog's earwax is not severe, cleaning is relatively simple. First, gently part the hair around the Sheltie's ears with your hand, lift the ear flap, use a cotton swab dipped in glycerin to apply to the outer ear canal of the Sheltie, then gently massage the dog's ear root with your hand to evenly distribute the oil inside the ear. Finally, clean it with a cotton swab or small cotton ball.
2. Excessive or hard earwax. You should first disinfect the outer ear canal with an alcohol cotton ball, then use 3% sodium bicarbonate ear drops or 2% boric acid solution. It's best to buy special pet ear drops at a veterinary hospital, apply them to the earwax area, wait for the earwax to soften, then gently remove it with small tweezers. Be careful not to insert the tweezers too deeply, as a dog's ear is very delicate. Pay close attention during cleaning. If the Sheltie shakes its head, quickly remove the tweezers to avoid injuring the eardrum or piercing the ear canal mucosa.
3. Ear inflammation. For inflamed ear canals, it is best to buy special anti-inflammatory ear drops at a veterinary hospital, such as 4% boric acid glycerin ear drops, 2.5% chloramphenicol glycerin ear drops, or cortisone neomycin ear drops, applied three times a day, two to three drops each time. Lift the Sheltie's ear to allow the drops to flow into the depth of the ear, then gently massage to help absorption. In less severe cases, chloramphenicol eye drops can be used as a substitute. If there is no improvement, seek veterinary care promptly.
Different situations for Shelties require different treatments, allowing the dog to have clean, healthy, and adorable little ears.
