Silent cats have strong observational skills. Although they don’t speak, they are usually very sensitive and can guess the owner’s thoughts, whether the owner is about to travel, and so on. Loving owners always give their beloved pets a nice and easy-to-understand name. The first step in training a cat is to let it remember its own name to achieve “come when called.” From the cat’s first day home, just like remembering the location of the litter box, let it remember its own name.

The most effective method is to call the cat’s name before feeding. Once it understands that being called by name means food, it will naturally remember how to respond to its name. Consequently, in situations other than mealtime, when called, it will "meow" or look back or wag its tail as a response. This facilitates further training. Once it knows its own name, it will come when hearing it even if it’s lost. Many owners like to talk to their cats regularly; at such times, saying "Come, Mimi" using the cat’s name works even better. (Source:PetsZone)
