Training Cats to Defecate Requires Grasping the Right Timing

After one to three months of birth, when the kitten starts eating solid food, you can begin defecation training; as long as you grasp the right timing, it can easily remember.

  1. Find a “convenient” good place First, put the litter box in a fixed, hidden place, because with many people around, the cat will feel embarrassed. When the kitten's tail is raised and it shows a squatting motion, it means it wants to relieve itself, hurry! Quickly place the kitten into the litter box so it knows this is where to go. Soon, after repeating this two or three times, the cat will learn where to relax when it needs to go.

  2. Fight the smell If the cat urinates or defecates everywhere, never use harsh methods like “you, you, you, it’s all your fault…” and grabbing it to spank as punishment for breaking rules. This will have the opposite effect because cats are attracted to the smell and may think you’re telling it that spot is a fixed toilet. Oh! That would be troublesome. At this time, thoroughly clean these areas to remove the smell and be patient, continuing to train it to use the fixed litter box area. Of course, kittens born and raised with their mother don’t need us to worry so much, as the mother cat will lead them well.

The beloved cane! Oh, too violent? Don’t misunderstand, this is not to tell everyone how to beat a cat! It’s about appropriate ways to handle cats when they don’t follow rules.

  1. Rules are rules, no changing them arbitrarily. When the owner sets a rule, it must be enforced consistently. You can’t hold the cat on the dining table one day and chase it down the next; this will confuse the cat.

  2. Principle of punishment—only punish on the spot.

  3. Establish verbal reprimand authority. If a cat has been living with people for some time and especially if it understands its name, it will be sensitive to the owner’s tone. When you find the cat breaking rules, use a firm, stern, and simple tone to reprimand it directly; the cat will usually be alert.

  4. Intimidate with sound. Some naughty cats seem difficult to train, so use unexpected tactics, like intimidating with noise. Clap loudly in front of it or use a cheering horn from sports games or political rallies. Use it when you catch the cat in the act. The cat will likely freeze or run away. Keep the cheering horn at least one meter from the cat and never aim it at the head to avoid causing physical or mental harm.

  5. Portable weapon: toy water gun. This is recognized as quite effective, especially when the cat is a bit distant! Once you notice the cat climbing windowscreens, pawing the fish tank, or jumping on the countertop, don’t hesitate to give it a squirt! Please use a small toy water gun; some large water guns have too strong a stream and may harm the cat’s eyes or wet the house. Some suggest a BB gun, but even a toy BB gun’s harmfulness is debatable, so it’s not recommended.

  6. Physical punishment is unwise behavior. First, whether the target is a person or a cat, physical punishment is unwise and should be avoided. It will make the cat afraid of the owner. The cat will play along obediently in front of the owner but start mischief as soon as the owner leaves, treating rules as merely a way to appease the owner. If punishment is excessive, the cat may develop mental stress, become timid and fearful of people, or even seek revenge. In extreme cases, the cat becomes an unfortunate abused animal.

Seeking revenge—in extreme cases, the cat becomes the unfortunate abused animal.
