Why Can't You Raise Yellow Cats? There Is an Old Saying Behind It
The appearance of a cat doesn’t really mean anything. People who say raising yellow cats is unlucky cannot truly explain why. It’s like how people think raising yellow dogs can ward off evil spirits, but actually it’s just a saying, and nobody really knows why it’s said that way. In ancient China, the laboring people’s superstitions have already destroyed many innocent lives. The price paid for superstition has been far too high. Therefore, as a generation of knowledgeable and scientifically minded young people, we shouldn’t easily believe such groundless rumors. Once you decide to care for a living creature, you must be responsible for that life. Through sickness and health, life and death, you must protect it forever.
Chinese people pay attention to blessings, luck, fortune, feng shui, and other invisible, intangible things. Some people even keep pets at home to adjust their own fortune, such as raising fish or turtles, which represent their good wishes. As the old Chinese saying goes: yellow cats are unlucky, seeing a yellow cat brings three days of bad luck, and so on. These baseless words have been passed down from generation to generation. However, in the West, cats have long been symbols of mystery. They possess qualities such as flexibility, agility, and independence, full of mystique. Yellow, on the other hand, represents evil. Therefore, innocent yellow cats were said to be witches’ “familiars,” which translates to “messengers” in Chinese. It is said that at night, witches ride yellow cats and run around the woods. There are also legends that witches transform into yellow cats at night. Consequently, yellow cats once had a history of being universally despised, comparable to rats crossing the street. Of course, what we hear now sounds like nonsense.
Besides that, there are many superstitions about yellow cats. For example, the British believe that if a yellow cat appears in front of you and allows you to gently stroke its head, it signifies the arrival of good luck. Conversely, if it presents its rear to you and lets you stroke its tail, it brings bad luck. Anyone who often spends time with cats knows that when a cat willingly turns its back to you, it is actually an “honor.” Because the back is the most vulnerable area most easily attacked, its willingness to expose that vulnerable spot to you means it trusts you deeply.
With the development of the times, technological progress, cultural expansion, and advancement of civilization, the ignorant era is gone forever. Yellow cats are no longer symbols of evil forces, but one of the most charming colors among cats.
