Training Cats to Coexist Peacefully with Other Animals
Oriental Shorthair Cat
Some cats have an irritable temperament and find it difficult to get along peacefully with other animals, but some cats are naturally gentle and can play with the household companions. Actually, a cat’s temperament is hard to change, but through training, it is possible to modify a cat’s attitude towards small animals at home, minimizing its aggression or destructive behavior. Even if they cannot become friends, they can at least try to ignore each other.
1. Training Cats to Respect Pets in Cages
No matter what kind of family your cat comes from, whether it is mixed breed or a high-quality pedigree cat with noble lineage, they will retain their innate hunting skills. Even kittens raised indoors must engage in hunting by capturing toys or playing with their cat siblings or mother, continuing this predatory behavior. Catching and attacking spiders, moths, or even ping pong balls strengthens this behavior as they reach adulthood. Cat owners must acknowledge that they cannot change this instinctive behavior of cats but can take certain measures to enable cats and other small animals to coexist peacefully.
Objective: Prevent other pets at home from becoming a cat’s delicious meal.
Steps: 1. Keep them separated. 2. Many cat owners find that even feeding cats daily does not reduce their hunting behavior. Feeding cats full meals and encouraging them to sleep only provides temporary results.
