Chinchilla Cat

　　Make sure to prepare a satisfactory nest for the mother cat, especially as the due date approaches, when you need to pay close attention to her. If she stays in the nest for a long time without coming out, check if she has started giving birth. We need to prepare a basin of warm water, a clean towel, a sterilized pair of scissors, a pair of medical gloves, and some sterilized thread cut into 10cm lengths for later use.

　　Cats do not experience pain when giving birth. When she lies on her side, she will lick her genital area. You will see the mother cat straining, with gray fluid flowing out, and when you see something emerging, it is the kitten. Don’t worry at first; it usually comes out smoothly. If a kitten is half inside and half outside for over 10 minutes, we need to help. Put on thin sterilized medical gloves and gently pull the kitten out. The kitten may be covered with a thin membrane. The mother will lick it off, but we can also gently wipe the kitten with a towel dipped in warm water and wrung out. Sometimes the membrane is almost invisible when the kitten is born, but there will always be an umbilical cord attached. If we are not present, the mother will bite the cord to sever it. If we are there, first tie the cord about 1.5 to 2 cm from the kitten’s body with a thread, making a tight knot. Then, cut the cord 1 cm away from the knot with scissors.

　　The newborn kitten will be wet all over and its eyes will be tightly shut. Wipe its nose and mouth clean to prevent any fluids or other materials from blocking breathing. Kittens are also very sensitive to cold; after all, the mother’s womb is very warm. After wiping the kitten dry, place it under the mother's belly. The kitten will be very tired after the ordeal.
