How to Train an American Shorthair Cat Not to Jump on the Bed
American Shorthair Cat
To train an American Shorthair cat not to jump on the bed, you must start training it from a young age and let it sleep in a designated cat bed. If the American Shorthair cat has already developed the habit of sleeping with its owner, it should be corrected through training.
When the American Shorthair cat jumps onto the owner’s bed, you should immediately tap the cat’s hindquarters and loudly scold it to drive it off the bed. Generally, cats are very sensitive to the owner's emotions; after repeated corrections like this, the cat will no longer dare to sleep on the bed. Meanwhile, a warm and comfortable bed should be prepared for the cat, with straw or a mat laid in the cat bed during winter.
If the habit of jumping on the bed is difficult to correct, stricter punishments can be used. For example, using a child’s water spray gun prepared in advance to spray water at the cat when it tries to jump on the bed. The cat will immediately run away after being suddenly splashed with water. After a few such water sprays, the cat will develop an aversive conditioned reflex toward the bed and will no longer jump on it.
An electric shock method can also be used to knock the cat down. Generally, after receiving an electric shock once, the cat will no longer jump on the bed. Cats also have a habit of climbing high; when cats jump around on tables, it is both unhygienic and can damage utensils. Therefore, they should be disciplined not to climb on tables. When the cat climbs on the table, the owner should gently tap its head while sternly saying “No.”
If the cat ignores this, the taps should be harder, and the tone stricter. If the cat obeys and gets down from the table, the owner should promptly stroke its head or body and say “Good boy” as verbal praise. After repeated training like this, the cat will jump down from the table whenever told “No,” and gradually break the habit of climbing on the table. (Source:PetsZone)
