Methods for Handling Cats' Accidental Injuries
Ragdoll Cat
【Injury and Bleeding】
Falling from a height usually causes nose and mouth bleeding, fractures, unconsciousness, or shock. Immediately perform emergency artificial respiration and cardiac massage, stop bleeding, immobilize fracture sites, and send to the hospital. For deep chest or abdominal trauma, visible internal organs may be seen. After disinfecting with hydrogen peroxide, wrap the entire chest or abdomen with cloth or bandages.
If the cat is bleeding, first pour hydrogen peroxide on the wound, then press firmly with clean gauze and perform simple bandaging. If a limb fracture is suspected, the cat will lift the injured leg; rinse with hydrogen peroxide, press the wound with gauze, and stabilize the limb with a wooden board.
【Stopping Bleeding】
Clean the wound with a wet cotton cloth, trim matted hair around it, and apply a mild antiseptic. Applying petroleum jelly around the wound edges prevents hair from sticking to the wound. If bleeding is severe, soak gauze in cool water and cover the wound with light pressure.
If bleeding does not stop, wrap the gauze with a bandage and add another piece of gauze on top. For safety, add another bandage to tighten over the second layer. Severe bleeding requires immediate hospital treatment.
【Poisoning】
Poisoning often occurs when dog flea treatments are mistakenly used on cats, causing immediate high fever, drooling, vomiting, followed by hypothermia. Immediately wash off the topical medicine, wrap the cat, and bring the flea treatment package to the hospital.
If suspected ingestion of human cold medicine, sleeping pills, sedatives, or fever reducers, bring the medicine package with the cat to the hospital.
If the cat eats poison-killed mice or bait, heavy bleeding may occur; keep the cat warm and send it to the hospital. Cockroach poison is highly toxic; never spray near where cats move. If poisoning occurs, wrap the cat and bring the poison container to the hospital immediately.
When accidents happen, owners must calmly follow these steps to ensure the cat's life is not at risk. If first aid cannot be completed, immediately send the cat to the nearest veterinary hospital. (Source:PetsZone)
