Training Cats to Catch Mice

Burmese Cat
In earlier years, cats raised in rural homes were best at catching mice, but now as pets, cats often hide as soon as they see mice. So how can you teach a cat to catch mice? What methods are there to train cats to catch mice?
Research has found that cats are naturally born with an instinct to "want to catch moving objects." Cats will instinctively and curiously reach out to catch anything moving in front of them. Catching moving things is a cat's nature, but the level of catching ability indeed requires later cultivation and training.
Once a cat’s bones and legs have well developed, you can start training it to catch mice. When beginning mouse-catching training, the requirements should not be too harsh, and training should progress from easy to difficult. At first, place the mouse and the cat together in a closed environment, with the cat hungry while staying with the mouse. First, teach the cat how to chase the mouse, then gradually let the cat learn the methods of ambush, sneaking up, and leaping to catch the mouse during actual chasing and capturing. As training time lengthens, the training space can be appropriately enlarged, and obstacles can be added in the space so the pet cat can experience the true fun of hunting and further improve its mouse-catching skills.
Training a cat to catch mice requires mastering the right training timing, and during training, you cannot rush; it must be step-by-step. Trainers should tolerate mistakes made by the cat during training, but they must not blindly forgive deliberate errors. During training, trainers must clearly distinguish rewards and punishments, enabling the cat to master the method of catching mice in the shortest time. (Source:PetsZone)
