The Reason Why Pet Cats Like to Stay in High Places

Cat owners probably have the feeling that cats seem to like staying in high places, such as on top of cabinets. Why is that?
Actually, we may never fully know the true reason why cats like to stay in high places, but there are several theories:
1. Height is a symbol of status. If there is more than one cat in the home, the cat occupying the best high point is usually the dominant cat, meaning the highest cat is the boss.
2. Height gives cats a better vantage point. From a higher position, cats can more easily observe others or other pets within their territory. In the wild, high places are easier to hide in and not be discovered by prey.
3. In colder regions, cats choose the warmer places to keep warm. Some higher places, such as on top of refrigerators or cabinets near warm air vents, might be places they find warm.
4. If there is something that scares the cat, such as another dog in the house, a high place makes the cat feel it can stay away from the thing that frightens it.
