How to help kittens eliminate nervousness

Tabby Cat

  1. Start training from a young age, correct mistakes immediately

Cats must be educated immediately at the scene of their mistake. Since many cat owners have to work, this may be difficult to accomplish, increasing the difficulty of correcting bad behavior.

Training should start during the cat's kittenhood. It is very difficult to correct a bad habit in an adult cat, but it's easier to prevent from the beginning. However, as long as you persist, any cat can learn some simple behavioral rules.

Training is best started within a few days after bringing the cat home. Keep a water spray bottle or a noise maker handy (you can put some coins in an aluminum can). Whenever the cat climbs on chairs or scratches the furniture, spray it with water or shake the noise maker beside it. If you cannot watch it at all times, restrict its activity area before leaving. Do not physically punish the cat, as this only causes fear and loss of trust in the owner.

  2. Create a suitable environment, train happily

Do not leave tasty food or items that pique the cat's curiosity on tables or chairs where the cat can find them. This encourages cats to climb. If the floor is messy or there are things or animals that frighten the cat, it will have to jump onto furniture to stay.

Please prepare a scratching post for your cat. The scratching post can be wrapped with a rough blanket or be a bare wooden stick, depending on the cat’s preference. You can also set up a sunny spot or a place to watch the scenery on the windowsill or other elevated areas. A cat’s greatest pleasure is sitting in the sun enjoying the view, safely understanding the outside world.

When you are not at home, you can take some auxiliary measures to help the cat consolidate good behavior. For example, wrap scratched areas on furniture with plastic bags or aluminum foil as a warning sign. You can also place the noise maker casually on a chair so that if the cat jumps on it, it falls and makes a sound. When such an incident occurs, the owner should strengthen training after coming home.

Good behavior must also be praised. If a cat uses the scratching post you prepared or sits on the designated windowsill, immediately give it a treat and say some words of praise.

The key to training is to make the cat feel happy while establishing good behavior. If the suggested methods above do not work, reconsider whether you have provided a living environment that satisfies your cat’s nature and preferences, and adjust accordingly. (Source:PetsZone)
