Methods to Correct Abnormal Eating in Cats
Burmese Cat
Cats' abnormal eating behaviors generally include three types: anorexia, overeating, and pica. These behaviors pose many potential threats: anorexia can lead to cat weight loss and internal dysfunction; overeating causes obesity; pica easily results in cats eating random objects causing choking or food poisoning. Therefore, these should be corrected in time.
1. Cats with anorexia show a lack of appetite or even refuse to eat. This may be due to unclean feeding utensils or feeding locations, or contaminated food, so it is necessary to change to a clean feeding place and food. Another possibility is respiratory diseases; after medical treatment, delicious food should be used to forcibly stimulate the cat’s appetite.
2. Cats with overeating behaviors initially do not show much physical impact. However, after a while, this will cause obesity. At this time, increasing the cat's exercise and feeding low-calorie food should be done. Hunger therapy and dieting should be used only under a veterinarian's advice; do not try on your own to avoid adverse consequences for the cat.
3. Cats with pica will consume things outside of a normal diet. We often find cats nibbling on plants we grow or chewing yarn, etc. The first method is to create a conditioned reflex: when the cat is eating foreign objects, spraying water or shouting to scare it. After several times, the cat will correct pica behavior. Alternatively, apply unfamiliar odors like vinegar or deodorant on items the cat frequently licks; the cat will avoid these smells and stop pica. However, this will not succeed at once and requires multiple attempts.(Source:PetsZone)
