Four Basic Methods to Train Pet Cats

Persian Cat
1. Forcing
Forcing refers to using mechanical stimulation and threatening commands to make cats accurately perform corresponding actions. For example, training a cat to lie down involves the trainer issuing the "lie down" command while pressing the cat down with their hand, forcing it to lie down. After repeating several times, the cat quickly forms a conditioned reflex for lying down. When using this method on a cat, the intensity of the stimulus must be controlled because cats often have a stubborn mentality and accept soft methods but resist harsh ones.
2. Inducing
Inducing refers to using food, objects, or the trainer's movements to lure the cat into performing a certain action. This method is more suitable for training kittens.
3. Rewarding
Rewarding aims to reinforce the cat's correct actions, consolidate formed conditioned reflexes, or adjust the cat’s nervous system state. Reward methods include food, praise, and petting. Rewarding must be combined with forcing to be effective; after each forced correct action, a reward should be given immediately. The level of reward should gradually increase with the difficulty of training. It should be noted that overly frequent rewards or too low conditions can cause kittens to become indifferent to minor rewards.
4. Punishing
This includes scolding, intimidating, hitting, and so on. Once a bad habit is discovered in the cat, punishment measures should be used promptly to prevent the cat from developing fear or boredom towards training. (Source:PetsZone)
