How to Train Cats to Not Scratch Furniture
Burmese cat
Cats like scratching as their specialty, and importantly, they enjoy scratching the same spot repeatedly. This can easily cause damage to your furniture. So do you know why cats like to keep scratching? And how to make cats stop scratching furniture randomly?
This is because cats' paws have abundant glands that secrete a sticky and fragrant liquid. During scratching, the liquid adheres to the surface of the scratched objects, and the scent of this secretion attracts cats to scratch the same spot again. Also, after waking up and stretching, cats often carry out scratching behavior. Based on these habitual actions of cats, corresponding measures can be taken for training.
Before training, prepare a wooden post about 70cm long and approximately 20cm thick, which should be firmly fixed upright near the cat's nest to facilitate scratching. The wood should be sturdy.
Training should start with kittens. During training, bring the kitten to the wooden post, hold its two front legs with both hands, and place them on the post to simulate the cat's scratching motion. This allows the secretion from the glands on the cat’s paws to be applied to the post. After multiple trainings, combined with the attraction of the secretion’s scent, the cat will start scratching the wooden post. By forming this habit, the cat will stop scratching the furniture, protecting its cleanliness and appearance.
For cats that have already formed the habit of scratching furniture, cover the scratched area with plastic boards, wooden boards, etc. Then place a sturdy wooden post or board at a suitable position near the scratched spot. Use the same method to train the cat to scratch the wooden post or board. After the cat develops this habit, gradually move the post or board until it reaches your desired location. Each move should not exceed 5 to 10 centimeters and must not be rushed. (Source:PetsZone)
