Cats Love Scratching and Biting, How to Train a Birman Cat Not to Bite People?

How should we prevent Birman cats from biting and scratching people? First, cultivate good habits of interacting with humans from an early age, letting the cat know which behaviors the owner dislikes.

When the Birman cat instinctively grabs and bites your fingers while playing, you can loudly scold or make an angry sound while lightly tapping his head immediately (be careful not to tap too hard, or he might hate you; nor too lightly, or he might think you are playing with him), then offer your fingers to him again; he will usually bite you again out of a sort of retaliatory mentality. At that moment, tap his head again and offer your fingers once more.

Repeat this four or five times until he does not bite your hand hard but only gently holds your finger in his mouth. When he bites again next time, use this method again. Generally, good results will appear within a month.

Of course, the Birman cat’s need to grind teeth and play must also be considered. You can prepare some toys for him, such as paper balls, cat-specific toy mice, etc., so the kitten can release energy and satisfy his innate need to bite.

One more point is to develop good habits in the Birman cat from kittenhood, trying not to use your hand to tease him, especially not putting your fingers near his mouth and then suddenly pulling away. Such actions cause him to regard your hand as prey and instinctively pounce and bite it.

Secondly, those who can afford it should consider raising two cats at the same time. The two cats accompany each other and can play well; when the owner is not home, they won’t be lonely; and because they have a playmate, their interest in "attacking" humans greatly decreases.

Kittens are like blank sheets of paper, just like human children. They don’t know what is right or wrong. Only through the owner’s patient education can they develop good living habits and live harmoniously and happily with humans.
