How to Let Cats and Dogs Live Peacefully Together

Cats are solitary animals, proud and independent; dogs are social animals, outgoing and love company. Cats like to purr sweetly when happy; dogs interpret purring as a warning signal. However, in many families, cats and dogs not only get along well but can also become good friends. In fact, with proper guidance, many cats and dogs can become close companions.

  1. Puppies Like Cats, Adult Dogs Love Kittens

Whether cats and dogs can be good neighbors depends on the cat’s personality. Relatively speaking, cats are sensitive and timid, unlike dogs who enjoy socializing. They may get scared (mostly cats scare themselves) or initiate challenges by making threatening sounds, even swatting a dog’s head with their paws. Kittens are more accepting of dogs and may even fall in love with this silly big companion. Puppies always like to make friends with any possible playmates. The ideal situation is to introduce a puppy and a kitten at the same time. Adult cats who have lived with dogs before can also become good friends with adult dogs. Adult dogs usually relax well around kittens, but adult cats do not easily accept puppies. Owners should not expect an adult cat to actively play with a dog; instead, train your dog to relax in such cases.

  2. Impossible Partners

Adult dogs with strong hunting instincts may pose threats, requiring extra caution when certain dog breeds live with cats. Large dogs once used for racing or hunting often see small animals as prey. A greyhound trained from a young age to chase rabbits will hardly coexist peacefully with cats. Breeds with flat faces and protruding eyes, such as Pekingese and Pugs, are also unsuitable for living with aggressive cats because their eyes are easily injured.

  3. Controlling Dog Behavior

Dogs have a strong territorial sense; if a dog enters a household with cats, it may feel like it has invaded the cat’s territory and behave respectfully toward the cat. When introducing a strange cat and dog, control the dog with a leash. If the cat is willing, let it smell the dog’s scent, but do not let the dog’s strength overwhelm the cat, nor force the cat to approach the dog. Immediately tighten the leash when the dog gets too close to the cat. Reward the dog promptly if it keeps its distance. Teach the dog that keeping distance from cats is a household rule.

  4. Provide Cats with an Escape Route

Usually, when a cat is still, the dog will calmly observe; once the cat starts to run, the dog excitedly chases. Careful owners should arrange an escape route for the cat, such as on top of cabinets or a small door only cats can pass through, and place the cat’s food bowl and litter box in elevated or dog-proof locations. Smart cats feel more secure and tolerant when they know they have a safe retreat. Never let them chase each other outdoors, as traffic accidents or getting lost can cause irreversible tragedy.

Dogs are honest and straightforward, cats are clever; they are all adorable spirits. Well-trained cats and dogs living under the same roof will surely bring endless joy and warmth to your family life.
