How to Choose a Good Playmate for Your Cat
Folded Ear Cat
If you plan to raise a second cat and your home environment allows it, then you need to consider how to choose a good playmate to accompany your original resident cat.
Even if there are no conflicts over food or territory in the family, cats can still have conflicts due to age and gender differences. Therefore, when selecting the second cat, the owner should pay attention to the age and gender pairing of the two cats to reduce the possibility of conflicts between them.
When the original cat is a kitten
If the original cat is a kitten, you can freely choose the age and gender of the new cat because kittens have strong acceptance ability and no sense of territory, so they can quickly get familiar with and accept the new cat.
When the original cat is an adult female cat
1. If the original cat is an adult female cat, it is more recommended to choose another adult female cat as a companion. Female cats have a weaker sense of territory. Although there are also individual differences between two cats, as long as the owner treats them fairly, they can coexist peacefully with less chance of fighting or causing trouble. 2. If the original cat is an adult female cat, you can also choose a male cat. Generally speaking, the female cat can quickly accept a male cat, but if the cats are not spayed or neutered, it will cause continuous breeding. Therefore, families with female cats who want to raise a male cat as well should have their cats spayed or neutered. 3. If you want to choose a kitten, you first need to consider whether the original female cat has maternal instincts. Generally, female cats who have given birth have stronger maternal instincts and are more likely to accept kittens. However, if the female cat has never given birth, because kittens are usually more playful and easily attract the owner's attention leading to more focus on the kitten, the original female cat may develop aversion and jealousy. After all, female cats tend to be more sensitive to environmental changes. 4. If the new cat is the offspring of the original female cat, she can accept the new cat’s presence. Generally, household kittens leave their parents at about three months old due to adoption or other reasons. If they are returned and come back to their parents, even when grown up, they will maintain the parent-offspring relationship, making it easier for them to integrate into family life.
