The Best Methods to Train Cats
Oriental Shorthair Cat
Kittens are most mischievous during their early months, and owners may think since the cat is still young, they do not pay much attention to problems like scratching furniture or inappropriate elimination. However, these can lead to many bad habits in cats, which become deeply rooted as they grow up and are difficult to correct. Therefore, it is best to start training cats from a young age.
1. Training Age: Training should begin at 2-3 months old, as cats are more receptive to training then and it lays the foundation for future improvement.
2. Timing: The best time to train cats is before feeding because hungry cats are more willing to be close to people and more obedient. Food is a temptation for cats, making training easier.
3. Organic Combination of Various Stimuli: Various stimuli and methods should be combined organically. Attitudes should be neither too harsh nor completely free. A balance of firmness and gentleness, strictness and leniency is needed. However, when training a specific action, do not use too many methods to avoid confusing the cat.
4. Attitude Should Be Kind and Patient: Cats have a stubborn personality and strong pride and do not like to be controlled. Therefore, the attitude should be gentle, like playing with the cat. Even if the cat makes a mistake, excessive scolding or punishment should be avoided, lest the cat develop an aversive reaction to training, affecting the entire training process.
5. Progressive Approach: Training should be gradual and not rushed. Only one action can be taught at a time, never several simultaneously. Cats find it hard to learn many commands at once. If they frequently fail, they may lose confidence and become annoyed, making future training difficult. Each training session should not exceed 10 minutes but can be conducted multiple times a day.
6. Training Environment Should Be Quiet: Multiple people should not train a cat simultaneously to avoid distracting the cat. Training actions should not be too sudden or produce loud noises, as cats are very sensitive to loud sounds or sudden movements. Avoid startling the cat, which may cause it to run away or hide and refuse to accept training. (Source:PetsZone)
