How Can Cats Stop Scratching Furniture
Tabby Cat
When cats scratch objects, they often like to claw the same place or the same part. This is because cats’ paws have abundant glands that secrete a sticky and scented liquid. During scratching, the liquid adheres to the object’s surface. The scent of this secretion attracts cats to revisit and scratch the same spot again. Also, when cats wake up and stretch, scratching behavior often occurs. Based on these habitual actions, corresponding training measures can be taken.
Before training, prepare a wooden post about 70 cm long and roughly 20 cm thick, standing upright and fixed near the cat’s resting place to facilitate scratching. The wood should be sturdy.
Training should start with kittens. During training, bring the kitten to the wooden post, hold the kitten’s two front legs with both hands, and place them on the post, simulating scratching behavior. This way, the secretion from the cat’s paw glands will be applied to the wooden post. After multiple training sessions, combined with the attraction of the scent, the cat will scratch the post. Developing this habit will prevent the cat from scratching the furniture, thereby protecting the furniture’s cleanliness and appearance.
For cats who have already developed the habit of scratching furniture, during training, first cover the scratched area with plastic sheets or wooden boards. Then place a sturdy wooden post or board at an appropriate position in front of the scratched area. Use the same method to train the cat to scratch the post or board. After the cat forms the habit, gradually move the post or board until it reaches your desired location. Each time the board is moved, the distance should not be too large, about 5 to 10 cm is recommended. Be sure not to rush it. (Source:PetsZone)
