Norwegian Forest Cat

　　Step 1: Preparation

　　Slowly move the litter box to a place very close to the toilet. My cat’s litter box is right next to the toilet, so I went directly to step two. Many are very agile; no matter where the litter box is, once you show it, the cat will remember.

　　Step 2: “Replace the Old with the New”

　　You need to buy a cake baking tin (a sturdy and appropriately sized plastic tray can substitute), which can safely hold flushable cat litter in the toilet. Ordinary clumping cat litter uses cement-like ingredients to form clumps, which are hard to break apart and can clog pipes if flushed. The tin pan size is best if it is nearly oval-shaped. If you can’t find a sturdy one, you can stack two tins together.

　　This step uses the tin pan to replace the original litter box and begins using flushable cat litter. (If your resists changing litter, you need to mix the old litter with the new one gradually. Generally, they don't resist. This flushable cat litter is very fine in texture and generally liked by cats.)

　　Step 3: Raise the Litter Box

　　Use newspapers or cardboard boxes to gradually raise the litter box (which is the tin pan) each day. Make sure it is stable and doesn’t feel shaky or unsafe for the to stand on it. (Magazines are slippery and not suitable for raising.) This helps the cat get used to jumping up to use the toilet. Eventually, raise it to the same height as the toilet.

　　If you know your cat is not very picky about the texture of the litter or the position of the litter box, you can skip the first three steps, put flushable cat litter in the tin pan, and go directly to step four.

　　Step 4: Official Practice

　　Place the tin pan on the toilet, cover it with the seat cushion, but keep the toilet lid open all the time. If the litter box feels unstable after placing it, fix it with tape. If your cat drinks water from the toilet, do not use any automatic toilet cleaning chemicals because the corrosive water inside can poison your cat.

　　It's better to go slowly than to have the cat rebel. At first, there will be litter everywhere, but with less litter and the opening gradually increasing, the cat will scratch less, and less litter will fall on the floor. When the hole becomes about the size of a small egg, if the cat’s squatting position is stable and the urination spot is fixed, it will easily fall into the toilet, greatly reducing cleanup.
