Why Should Dogs Have Their Nails Trimmed
Labrador Retriever
When it comes to dog grooming, it basically includes bathing, hair trimming, hair plucking, and nail trimming. However, helping dogs trim their nails is quite a headache because many dogs dislike having their nails cut. This is because dogs have very tough paw pads, but the tops and spaces between their toes are filled with very sensitive nerve endings, so they dislike us touching them. So is it okay not to trim a dog’s nails? Why should dogs have their nails trimmed?
Most pet dogs nowadays spend the majority of their time indoors, with only limited time for outdoor activity each day. The smooth floors inside have little effect on naturally wearing down their nails. But if nails are not managed, they will grow longer and longer. Some dogs’ nails may even curve and potentially pierce into the paw pad, causing inflammation. Moreover, overgrown nails can easily damage indoor items such as floors.
This is why trimming a dog’s nails is necessary. Whether it’s for the dog’s own health or to protect furniture, trimming their nails is very important.
