Why Dogs Do Not Like Bathing
French Bulldog (Detailed Introduction)
Although for the sake of dogs’ cleanliness and health, we all bathe our dogs regularly, dogs themselves do not really like bathing and even somewhat dislike it. Even though some dogs appear happy while bathing, it is mostly because they enjoy playing with water. So why do dogs not like bathing? Let’s explore the reasons.
By nature, dogs only need to roll around in the grass a few times to relieve the itch caused by not bathing. Moreover, what we consider bathing smells unpleasant to pet dogs; they prefer their own body odor. Aside from dog odor, other smells are strange to them. Many pet owners may have noticed that dogs often rub themselves everywhere after a bath partly to dry off the water in their fur and partly to rub off the fresh bath scent to regain their familiar smell. Some pet dogs consider grooming as bathing because brushing can remove dust and debris stuck in the fur and help prevent skin diseases. For dogs that do not sweat, the skin surface rarely accumulates dirt, so brushing can have a similar effect to bathing in some ways. For dogs that particularly dislike bathing, owners can reduce the frequency of baths by maintaining daily grooming.
Dogs actually prefer their own natural scent over the smell after a bath. Therefore, it is unnecessary to bathe them frequently. Just regular baths will suffice, and avoid bathing dogs too often.
