Why Beagles Are Often Chosen as Laboratory Dogs

Any study of diseases or drugs requires certain experimental subjects, which is unavoidable. Although this practice may be somewhat unfair to the animals used in experiments, for the sake of the health of more of their own kind or other species, a certain amount of sacrifice is necessary. Among laboratory dogs, Beagles are a very common breed. So, what are the advantageous features of this breed for experimental purposes?

First of all, Beagles have an advantage in size. Their medium build makes them easier to control. Moreover, Beagles generally have good health and relatively strong resistance compared to other dog breeds that are prone to illness. More importantly, their temperament is lively; even after several experiments, they can still maintain an optimistic and cheerful personality.

Additionally, they are friendly to humans and not aggressive. Due to their good obedience, they cooperate relatively well during certain tasks and are easier to manage. Of course, a gentle temperament, ease of training and handling, and friendliness alone are not enough; Beagles themselves have many physical advantages. Their genetics are stable, which is crucial for research to achieve good reproducibility and consistency. The Beagle breed is well established and excellent, generally free of hereditary neurological disorders.

Their consistent reactions and uniform morphology are notable. Because they have a very developed circulatory system and consistent organ functions, this is reflected in stable body temperature, which is 0.5°C lower than that of mixed-breed dogs. Therefore, they show good response consistency in experiments, especially strong adaptability to environments and disease resistance. They reach sexual maturity early, around 8 to 12 months, and have large litters. Because of their gentle nature, ease of training, few hereditary diseases, and good experimental reproducibility, Beagles are particularly suitable for research in pharmacology, cardiovascular physiology, ophthalmology, toxicology, surgery, and so on, and are internationally recognized by the medical and biological communities as ideal laboratory dogs. Currently, the annual global usage of this breed is about 100,000 heads.

Therefore, besides having a good temperament and obedience, Beagles are also very suitable for experiments in many other aspects. Besides being excellent laboratory dogs, they are also outstanding family pets. Many households also keep this breed as pets, and they can perform well in that role. However, every dog has certain drawbacks, and Beagles are no exception.

Why Beagles Are Often Chosen as Laboratory Dogs
Besides temperament, Beagles' physical constitution is also well-suited for experiments

1. Likes to bark:In the past, Beagles were often used to assist their owners in hunting, so loudly barking to alert the owner was an advantage. However, in modern society, this has become a disadvantage. Because Beagles are quite alert, even small noises may cause them to bark loudly.

2. Large appetite:Beagles are not large in size but have a big appetite. Therefore, this breed may more easily become overweight. However, Beagles require a certain amount of exercise, so as long as the owner takes the dog on adequate daily exercise, it can effectively prevent obesity.

3. Rash and active:Although Beagles have a lively and active temperament, they can be a bit rash, and their abundant energy, if not properly channeled, may lead to destructive behavior.

4. Very curious:Beagles have a strong curiosity and will often go forward to bite anything new. Their teeth are quite sharp, so furniture bitten by them often ends up severely damaged.

Beagles are excellent experimental animals as well as good family pets. With proper training to eliminate undesirable behaviors and habits, they can become a very outstanding breed.
