  Methods for detangling dog hair:

For dogs with severe tangles, use a comb or wire brush to comb along the direction of hair growth, starting from the tips of the hair and then moving toward the roots. Proceed gradually, and do not comb forcefully to avoid causing pain or pulling out hair. If the matting is severe, use scissors along the direction of the roots to cut the mats open, then comb again. If still unable to detangle, only the matted part can be cut off.

  Precautions for detangling dog hair:

  1. Do not wet the hair: When a dog’s hair is wet and then dries, it will shrink, making detangling impossible. Therefore, dogs with matted hair must absolutely avoid getting wet.

  2. Two combs: First use a rake comb to fully comb out the tangles at the hair ends, then gradually move toward the roots. When you feel the hair is already detangled, use a bristle brush to smooth the hair.

  3. Detangling spray: Detangling sprays rich in lanolin make combing the hair easier.

  4. Don’t take too long: If a dog has multiple matted areas or severe matting, grooming sessions should not be too long. Each combing session should not exceed 10 minutes. Proper breaks and encouragement help reduce the dog’s resistance and struggling. Short-haired dogs like Dobermans appear shinier if towel-dried immediately after bathing. Long-haired dogs like Pekingese, Maltese, Pomeranians, and Afghan Hounds look fluffy and shiny after bathing if distilled water is sprayed lightly on their coat and allowed to dry.

  5. Detangling knife: Using a specialized detangling knife can help you more easily deal with mats. Boar bristles are recognized worldwide as the finest and stiffest natural material, not irritating the skin, and can easily detangle mats of two or three hairs as well as the fine ends of hair tails. However, they are expensive, so consider substituting with other multi-toothed combs.
