Treatment and Prevention of Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus in Pet Dogs
If a dog’s gastric dilatation-volvulus is not rescued in time, death can occur within 2-3 hours or at most within 24 hours. Gastric dilatation-volvulus must be urgently taken to the hospital for emergency open abdominal surgery. The doctor will try to clear the contents in the stomach, reposition it, and suture the stomach to the normal position on the abdominal wall. If this surgery is not performed, the chance of recurrence is very high. Preventing gastric dilatation-volvulus is very difficult because the exact cause of this disease is still unclear; however, we already know some causes that can trigger the disease in dogs, so owners need to pay attention from the smallest details. Dogs with a strong appetite, adult dogs, or dogs with a broad chest should be especially cautious about gastric dilatation-volvulus because they are high-risk groups. In daily life, owners should maintain regular feeding schedules for their dogs and avoid overeating. Do not feed large amounts of food at one time; feeding less is much better than overfeeding.
