Training Tips for Dogs

If your beloved dog at home knows to relieve itself in a fixed place, then as an owner you must be very satisfied, boasting to everyone about how smart and obedient it is. Actually dogs understand more than that; with some proper training, every dog can become [gentle and refined], not only satisfying the owner, but also impressing friends and neighbors.

When you have just brought your beloved dog home, but this little furry thing cannot stay still for a moment—either biting and chewing everywhere, relieving itself everywhere, often jumping on people, or even howling at the moon in the middle of the night. Finally, you can no longer tolerate this troublemaker and resolve to teach it some rules. This article can provide some direction.

To educate a dog, you must first know your goal and the method to achieve it. To train a misbehaving and disobedient dog into a mature and well-behaved one, you must first establish a fixed environment for the dog to get used to. The following three things are what we want the dog to learn:

  1. Learn new correct behaviors.

  2. Discard wrong behaviors.

  3. Correct original inappropriate behaviors.

Owners must use two tools for training:

  1. Rewards that encourage the dog to perform well,

  2. And punishments that the dog tries to avoid by performing well.

If you habitually hold the dog when it jumps on the sofa, the dog will naturally learn to jump on the sofa. Although there are various things that can make a dog obedient, most dogs cooperate with their owners for food, the owner's affection, toys, or things that can help the dog chew. Conversely, removing positive reinforcements, that is, rewards, can also be effective. Using the example of the dog jumping on the sofa: if your dog jumps on the sofa and you leave the room ignoring it every time, next time it might not jump on the sofa anymore.

Another training tool is something so intimidating to the dog that it tries hard to avoid punishment. For example, most dogs dislike being sprayed in the face by a water gun. If the dog is sprayed every time it tries to bite something, naturally it will stop biting, and [spraying water] becomes an effective punishment. (Source: PetsZone)
