【Test】Personality Test for Adopting a Dog
Pomeranian (detailed introduction)
When you want to adopt a dog, the first thing you consider is whether the dog is friendly and has a good personality. Of course, animal shelters will also recommend some dogs that are more likable, but I think there is also a matter of fate between people and dogs. To understand the dogs you want to adopt from shelters, why not take a small test to help you pick the right dog.
Understand how long the dog has been in the shelter
According to research, it generally takes dogs at least two to three days to adapt to a new environment. Dogs that have just been sheltered tend to be anxious and restless. Dogs that have been sheltered for more than a week but still appear upset tend to be loyal. However, the trouble is these dogs are harder to train and have a bigger temper. You need to prepare to be patient in training them.
Determine if the dog is friendly
How to test if a dog is friendly? You can use the "hand talk" method recommended by animal behaviorists. First, you reach out your hand to see if the dog will come to sniff or lick your palm (of course, skip this for aggressive dogs). Some social and friendly dogs usually immediately stand up, raise their heads, and come over for you to pet.
Spend some time with your favorite dog in a quiet indoor environment
When you find a dog you like and want to know more about it, you can ask the shelter staff to arrange for you to meet in a quiet room. This helps test if the dog is interested in you. At first, pretend not to pay attention to the dog for a few minutes. If the dog is interested, it will proactively come to greet you, even jumping around to attract your attention.
Test the dog's tolerance
First, hug the dog about 15 times and test if it wants you to continue hugging. If it is willing to continue, it means the dog has a good temperament. If it gets angry and leaves, be cautious as it might bite you someday.
Test the dog's excitability
Jump around and make some noise around the dog for about 15 seconds, testing whether the dog gets excited with you and how long it takes to calm down. Some dogs may need other methods and patience to comfort them if they get scared.
Test the dog's separation anxiety
Leave the dog alone in a room for a few minutes. When you return, observe its reaction. If it shows anxiety and heavy panting, it indicates the dog suffers from separation anxiety. Such dogs can’t be separated from you and require constant companionship.
