The Schnauzer dog is a relatively lively dog, so it tends to get dirty easily.

Frequently going to grooming salons for the dog’s bath can definitely cost the owners quite a bit.

Here at Boqi Network, we will explain the methods and steps for bathing Schnauzer dogs, so from now on, everyone can bathe their Schnauzer babies at home, naturally saving quite a bit of money.

Schnauzer Dog Bathing Methods and Steps

1. Dilute the bath liquid first:

Although most dog shampoos already have a dilution ratio, in practice, bathing Schnauzers requires a slightly more diluted mixture.

Undiluted shampoo should also be diluted for easier even application, better foaming, and to reduce irritation to local skin and fur.

2. The water temperature should be appropriate:

An important point for bathing Schnauzers is the water temperature. Adult dogs have a body temperature around 38.5°C, puppies around 39-40°C. The water temperature is best close to their body temperature. Too cold or too hot water makes the dog feel uncomfortable. In winter, the water temperature should be slightly higher.

Once the dog is thoroughly wet, you can use the shampoo to wash. Do not rub vigorously with your hands; it’s best to wash in one direction to avoid matting fur.

After washing, some conditioner products can be applied. Finally, rinse thoroughly—make sure to rinse completely!

3. Drying:

After bathing the Schnauzer, the owner should towel dry it until half dry, then comb with a slicker brush, and blow dry.

Blow dry the fur on the body to prevent the dog from catching a cold in cold weather.

Make sure to dry from the roots of the fur first, then the tips. Pay attention to the wind strength and temperature; too hot can damage fur and skin, too cold may cause colds.

Use low wind strength when drying the head as much as possible. Do not just let the dog air dry in hot weather; this easily causes skin diseases.

4. Clean the anal glands:

Periodically, the Schnauzer’s anal glands should be cleaned. The anal glands are located at the 4 and 8 o’clock positions under the anus. Use fingers to press and you can feel two round balls. Continue pressing and a foul-smelling secretion will spray out. (Below are five steps after drying the dog’s fur:)

5. Ears:

Use ear drops and cotton swabs to clean dirt inside the Schnauzer’s ears, regularly pluck ear hair, and after cleaning, use a cotton swab dipped in ear powder to apply inside the ears to keep them clean and dry.

6. Eyes:

Use dog eye drops to rinse the eyes. Clean hair around the eyes and any eye discharge. (The commonly used chloramphenicol is said to potentially cause blindness in dogs and should not be used frequently!)

7. Nails:

Use a special nail clipper to trim the nails to about one-half of the white part, then perform simple daily trims as needed.

8. Trim the hair on the bottoms of the paws:

Trim the hair between the dog’s toe pads. Dogs have sweat glands on their feet, and trimming the hair makes them cooler and cleaner.

9. Trim hair at the roots of the thighs, armpits, and lower abdomen:

This area is prone to matting and dirtiness, and trimming here is very easy.

10. Trim the hair around the eyes:

Schnauzer hair tends to poke the eyes, so trim appropriately. Carefully cut the hair between the eyelids around the eye, but do not cut close to the skin. Leave some length so the hair does not poke the eyes. This also makes the eye sockets look better. Finally, two additional precautions:

1. When bathing, invert the basin and have the Schnauzer puppy stand on it; this usually keeps the dog from moving around too much;

2. When washing, be careful not to let water or shampoo flow into the ears, eyes, or nose. You can stuff cotton balls into the ears before washing.

When rinsing the head, reduce the water flow or use your hand to shield the eyes.
