Methods to Clean the Ears of a Scottish Shepherd Dog

The ears of the Scottish Shepherd dog are also filled with secret hair. Its ear canal is very deep and easily accumulates oil and dust, which over time can form earwax and breed ear mites. In daily life, owners should regularly clean the Scottish Shepherd’s ears, removing earwax inside the ear canal to prevent ear mites and protect the ear health of the Scottish Shepherd.
1. Cleaning the Scottish Shepherd’s ear canal should be done promptly. For owners, it is best to ensure cleaning once every week or every two weeks. Of course, if the Scottish Shepherd already has an ear infection, it is best to clean every 2-3 days.
2. During cleaning, you can wrap a warm, damp towel or soft cloth around a wooden stick, or use alcohol swabs or paraffin oil to help clean the dog’s ears. Note that if you need to drop a liquid to soften the earwax first, you must hold the dog’s head steady and prevent it from shaking wildly. After dropping, gently massage the dog’s ear; once the earwax softens, cleaning can be done.
3. When cleaning, you can use a clean cotton swab stick. Note, the cleaning motion must be gentle and slow, and you must secure the Scottish Shepherd’s head to avoid injuring the dog’s eardrum. Do not insert the cotton swab too deep into the ear canal, as this may hurt the dog’s eardrum.
If the Scottish Shepherd’s ear canal shows signs of infection or emits an odor, it is best to take the dog to a hospital and let a professional groomer or veterinarian care for it to ensure the ear problem is thoroughly resolved.
