Causes and Prevention of Constipation in Dogs
Manchester Terrier (detailed introduction)

Constipation itself is not a serious disease, but its impact on a dog's body can be severe. If constipation lasts too long, the dog may experience loss of appetite or even refusal to eat. Additionally, constipation causes a large accumulation of toxins in the body, which are then absorbed. Therefore, constipation is an issue that should not be ignored. Let's discuss the causes and prevention of constipation in dogs.

        Causes:

        1. Feed mixed with bones or hair.

        2. Changes in living environment disrupting the dog's normal defecation habits.

        3. Diseases such as anal abscess, anal fistula, rectal tumors, etc.

        4. Intussusception, intestinal hernia, pelvic fractures, prostate enlargement, etc.

        Diagnosis:

The main symptom is difficulty defecating; affected dogs often attempt to defecate but fail and frequently bark due to pain. Bowel sounds may weaken or stop, persistent vomiting may occur, anal region shows sensitivity to pressure, and dry, hard feces can be felt inside the rectum.

Based on medical history, clinical signs, and rectal or abdominal palpation, dry and hard feces can be detected, often painful on pressure, confirming the diagnosis.

        Prevention and Treatment:

        1. For primary constipation, mainly clear the intestines and promote defecation; enemas of warm soapy water, glycerin, or liquid paraffin 5–30 ml can be used.

However, during enemas, do not apply excessive pressure to avoid rectal wall perforation. Laxatives such as sodium sulfate (or magnesium sulfate) 5–30 g dissolved in 200 ml water can be given once. For mild constipation, oral honey often achieves good results.

        2. For secondary constipation, focus on treating the primary disease.

        3. After fecal clearance, appropriate exercise and a well-balanced diet with sufficient water intake are recommended.
