Physical characteristics of the Shar Pei
Shar Pei (detailed introduction)
The Shar Pei's body is very well-proportioned, with males usually slightly larger than females. The most distinctive feature of the Shar Pei is its wrinkled skin, which feels very soft to the touch, and the body is nearly square in shape. The shoulder height is generally around 18 to 20 inches. The Shar Pei’s nature is somewhat aloof and reserved, standing quietly and proudly. In puppies, the entire body may be covered with wrinkles, but as adults, these wrinkles may be limited to the head, neck, and withers.
The Shar Pei's head is large and slender, with the forehead covered in many wrinkles. The eyes are deep in color and small, almond-shaped, showing a worried expression. Its ears are very small, thick, equilateral triangular in shape with rounded tips, edges curled, positioned high and spaced wide apart.
The Shar Pei’s muzzle is quite distinctive—wide and full. The nose leather is large and broad, dark in color, sometimes matching the coat color. The teeth are strong with a scissor bite. The neck is relatively full with medium length, with many wrinkles around the neck and throat, and the skin is fairly loose with some loose flesh.
The Shar Pei’s rump is flat, and the tail root is positioned very high, which is quite unique. The tail is thick and round at the base, tapering to a fine, cone-shaped tip, curled over the back or along the spine.
The coat is extremely coarse and stiff, absolutely straight and erect on the main body areas but generally lies flat and somewhat smooth on the legs.
Solid colors and sable Shar Peis are considered the best. When trotting, their gait is smooth and stable; during a fast trot, the paws tend to converge toward the body’s centerline.
Overall, the Shar Pei looks lively, strong, and its unique and special appearance adds considerably to its appeal.
