Shetland Sheepdog (detailed introduction)

　　The Shetland Sheepdog is also known as the Collie. Originating from the UK, it was originally a low-class dog until 1860, when it became famous due to Queen Victoria’s enthusiastic praise. It was first exhibited in Birmingham in 1880. Later, crossed with the Russian Shepherd dog, it became noble and melancholic. A highly successful movie truly revived its popularity. The Shetland Sheepdog is a star among intelligent dogs: some win people’s love with their petite and beautiful appearance, while others gain their owner’s trust due to their understanding spirit. The Sheltie obviously belongs to the latter. From an ancient herding dog to a frequently featured protagonist in films, its alertness, intelligence, and hardworking nature leave a deep impression, rightfully earning it the title of a star dog that can accompany humans for a lifetime.

　　1. Puppies should not be too young or too old in age; selecting those 2–3 months old is most appropriate, as puppies of this age are easier to train.

　　2. Choose energetic, bright-eyed, attractive, and healthy puppies without any diseases. Never choose the smallest puppy in the litter, as these dogs are often congenitally weak and hard to raise well later.

　　3. Select puppies whose body shape basically conforms to the breed’s characteristics with the following specific requirements:

　　(1) Flat skull, wedge-shaped head, nose not sharp, black nose color, and scissor bite.

　　(2) Small ears and small eyes, both deep chestnut brown.

　　(3) Deep chest and sturdy back, with a lion-like back.

　　(4) Straight, strong limbs, oval-shaped feet, and low hock joints.

　　(5) Low-set tail root, long tail hair like a flag, usually hanging down but raising when excited.

　　(6) Double-layer coat: the upper coat is long and coarse; the undercoat is soft and dense, with abundant feathering on the chest and neck.

　　(7) Coat colors should be sable, black and white, blue-gray, or a mix of black, gray, and white.

　　(8) Skilled at running, with a light, flexible, agile, and natural gait.

　　4. When deciding to buy, be sure to request the dog’s pedigree certificate and relevant technical documents from the seller, as these are valuable for future feeding management and breeding. Knowing the lineage of the parents can avoid inbreeding during mating to prevent producing inferior dogs. Additionally, obtain vaccination certificates and a transfer certificate signed by both buyer and seller.
