Key Points for Proper Training of Golden Retrievers

1. Training time for Golden Retrievers should not be too long but must be consistent every day
The most important aspect of training a Golden Retriever is persistence. You don’t need to schedule too much time each day, but training should proceed steadily without rush or impatience.
If the owner is not energetic about training, the dog will sensitively perceive this emotion and become indifferent. Conversely, if the training sessions are too long, the dog may find it uninteresting and lack focus.
2. Basic principle: more praise, less reprimand
It has been mentioned multiple times before that dogs have been accustomed since wild times to obey the leader’s commands, and they live together with humans in the same way. When they complete an action following the “leader’s” order and receive your praise, they will show joy and satisfaction beyond our imagination.
Therefore, compared to reprimanding, we should praise and encourage more, treating this as the basic principle in training and education. If handled with a ratio of 1 reprimand to 9 praises, giving more praise and encouragement, dogs will show a stronger enthusiasm for learning.
3. Get familiar with your dog's personality before disciplining
Dogs have various personalities; some are submissive while others are stubborn. Some dogs will respond well to a gentle scolding, while others become more disobedient when scolded. Generally, long-haired dogs with softer fur tend to have softer personalities, while dogs with short, hard fur are often more stubborn. This is not absolutely the case, though. When reprimanding, it should be done with love and observation of the dog’s reaction to properly control the intensity.
