Classification of Dog Breeds
There are many breeds of dogs. Currently, there are 137 internationally recognized excellent dog breeds, each with different uses. There is no unified standard for dog breed classification yet. According to the common method used by the AKC American Kennel Club:
(1) Sporting dog breeds, common ones include Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, Labrador Retriever, Irish Setter, English Springer Spaniel.
(2) Hound breeds, hounds are good helpers for hunting, lively and loyal nature has earned them the status of beloved family dogs. Common breeds include Afghan Hound, Beagle, Dachshund, and Pointer.
(3) Working dog breeds, these dogs are mostly large, strong, and very gentle. Their jobs include guarding, transportation (e.g., pulling sleds), and guide dogs commonly seen in North America. Common breeds include Akita, Boxer, Alaskan Malamute, Great Dane, Great Pyrenees, Saint Bernard, Siberian Husky.
(4) Terrier breeds, terriers have been bred in England over the past few hundred years. They are very active, curious, energetic, mostly small in size, distinctive in appearance, and endearing. Common breeds include Jack Russell Terrier, Bedlington Terrier, Irish Terrier, Scottish Terrier.
(5) Toy dog breeds, common breeds include Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Pekingese, Shih Tzu, Papillon, Yorkshire Terrier.
(6) Non-sporting dog breeds, common breeds include Bichon Frise, Chow Chow, Poodle, Dalmatian, Chinese Shar-Pei.
(7) Herding dog breeds, common breeds include Bearded Collie, Border Collie, Collie, German Shepherd, Shetland Sheepdog, Corgi.
(8) Mixed breed dogs, common breeds include Tibetan Mastiff, Caucasian Ovcharka, Anatolian Shepherd.
