A dog's fetching ability evolved from hunting instincts. Puppies as young as two months old will pick up things from the ground. At this stage, using sticks, balls, and other items to tease them can help develop their retrieving ability.

　　If your dog does not pick up things from the ground, you can hand the item to it. When it opens its mouth to grab it, support its lower jaw and have it hold for a moment, then give the command "Give me." If it does not give it to you, do not forcibly take it, or it will lead to a tug-of-war between you and the dog. Instead, exchange the retrieving item with food.

　　Puppies like excitedly biting at pieces of cloth that their owners wave. You can also throw toys like knotted ropes or rattling balls, then run after them together while playfully competing. When the dog picks up the toy, pretend to chase it again. This mimics the playful interaction between puppies. Finally, trade the item in its mouth for food.

　　If the puppy is not interested in the item, try to stimulate its desire to retrieve: tie the item with a rope and swing it back and forth to encourage its urge to fetch. When it grabs it, encourage it by saying "Good," and gently pull the item towards yourself to make it hold on tighter.

　　To train a puppy to fetch thrown objects: throw an exciting item about 10 meters in front of it and issue the command "Fetch." If it hesitates, run with it to the item. When your dog returns with the item, immediately praise it and give the command "Drop it." Take the item with one hand and reward it with food with the other.
