Difference between Silky Terrier and Yorkshire

According to the AKC standards, both Yorkshire and Silky Terrier belong to the same terrier category, and both are small breeds. The Yorkshire weighs less than 3 kilograms, while the Silky Terrier has a shoulder height of about 9-10 inches, weighing roughly 4-5 kilograms, and is relatively shorter. Although Yorkshire and Silky Terrier look very similar, there are many distinctive features between the two, and these unique points become the key to distinguish them.

Difference between Silky Terrier and Yorkshire

Strictly speaking, the Yorkshire's head is flatter and smaller, the muzzle should not be too long, and the teeth are strong. Both scissor and pincer bites are acceptable. The Yorkshire's nose leather is black, eyes are medium-sized with darker eye rims. The ears are smaller, mainly V-shaped, erect on top of the head, with the root of the ears positioned close to each other.

For the Silky Terrier, the head appears slightly stronger, mainly wedge-shaped, and of medium length. The Silky Terrier's eyes are small, darker in color, mainly almond-shaped, and the eye rims are also quite dark. For Silky Terriers, light-colored eye rims or eyes are considered disqualifications. The Silky Terrier's skull is relatively longer than the muzzle, the nose leather is black, and the teeth are neatly aligned with a scissor bite.

Difference between Silky Terrier and Yorkshire

Observing the Yorkshire and Silky Terrier, you will find that the Yorkshire’s overall body size is smaller while the Silky Terrier is slightly larger. The Yorkshire’s entire body from the front legs to the rear appears square-shaped, whereas the Silky Terrier is slightly longer than tall, primarily rectangular. Also, the Yorkshire’s face is rounder, making the muzzle appear shorter, while the Silky Terrier’s face is longer, so its muzzle looks longer.
