Introduction to How to Train Dogs to Catch Frisbees

Training dogs is very necessary for owners, and it is even more meaningful if the dog learns the skill of catching frisbees. In frisbee dog training, beginners can divide what they need to learn into two parts: 'training steps' and 'training methods.' Among these two parts, I believe the training steps are more important than the methods because if the steps are wrong, it is very difficult to correct, but training methods can be adjusted flexibly.
Below I want to briefly introduce the initial training steps and methods↓
Steps for training dogs:
Develop and enhance the dog's interest in the frisbee, learn to control the dog's excitement → train the dog to抢 the frisbee from the owner's hand, while simultaneously training simple obedience → train circling using the ground rolling frisbee throwing method → train borrowing momentum → train catching frisbees in the air → train reaction speed → train trick moves.
Actually, among these steps, beginners need to be careful not to rush; do not throw the frisbee to the dog to catch immediately. First, the frisbee might hit the dog causing fear. Second, even if the dog learns to catch the frisbee thrown by the owner, continuing training will be difficult, and there may be other problems such as losing interest, refusing to bring the frisbee back, easily distracted attention, etc. So this is a reminder to beginners: do not just throw the frisbee to the dog immediately.
Methods for training dogs:
First, note that training sessions should not be too long, 15-20 minutes to start is enough.
1. Train the dog - stimulate the dog's interest in the frisbee
Method 1: Use the frisbee as a food and water bowl; the dog will come to like it.
Method 2: When the owner plays with the frisbee, let the dog watch from the side; if interested, it will voluntarily join in. Method 3: Let the dog watch other dogs playing frisbee; dogs have a strong ability to imitate each other.
2. Train the dog - when the dog is interested in the frisbee, how to control the dog's excitement
Method 1: Tease the dog around with the frisbee but do not let it bite the frisbee. When you see the dog very anxious, it means it is very excited. Then give the frisbee to the dog, which will make it happy, then抢 it back repeatedly.
Method 2: The owner and partner throw the frisbee to each other, letting the dog run back and forth between them; give the frisbee occasionally when the dog is very excited. Note: If the dog bites the frisbee and runs away, it must be stopped immediately.
3. Train the dog - when the dog is already excited upon seeing the frisbee, you can train it to bite the frisbee and obedience training. Simply put, gradually increase the number of times the dog bites the frisbee while excited, pairing this with “bite” and “release” commands. Once these two commands are mastered, you can first have the dog “sit” and then “bite.” This way, the dog will learn the “sit” command as well, and you can also add commands like “stay” and “lie down” for obedience.
4. Train the dog - circling Circling can be trained using the ground rolling frisbee method, where the frisbee rolls on the ground like a wheel. This is easier, and also trains the dog to get used to biting a moving object. If you just throw the frisbee flat, the dog might develop the habit of picking up frisbees from the ground, which is problematic. When training circling, a long leash can be used to assist training.
5. Train the dog - train borrowing momentum After the dog is familiar with the “bite” command, you can add the owner's body part between the dog and frisbee. It is best to start from the leg, then train the upper back, as training off the chair's leg is easier.
6. Train the dog - catching frisbee in the air Once the previous training is done, this action will not require much effort; just gradually increase the distance from near to far.
7. Train the dog - train reaction speed At this time, use multiple frisbees for training; have the dog continuously “bite” and “release,” gradually increasing speed.
