How to Train Dogs to Use Dog Toilets

Many busy white-collar owners cannot take their dogs for walks on schedule, so they need to train their dogs to use dog toilets. After selecting a suitable dog toilet for your dog, how to train it is very important. Generally, training your dog to use a dog toilet requires teaching it to use a fixed indoor location before six months old; it becomes harder to teach older dogs.

  1. Signs of needing to urinate or defecate:

Sniffing frantically, circling, restless sitting, and muttering repeatedly. When a dog is under 6 months old, do not expect it to behave perfectly; its little brain often can’t control its body. If you can’t take your dog out every 3–4 hours, preparing newspapers or pee pads at home is a good choice.

  2. Training methods for defecation:

  1. Place the dog toilet (or newspaper) in the dog’s hygiene area. If the dog shows signs of needing to defecate, immediately guide it to the toilet (or newspaper) and issue the command “Go potty!” so it understands it can relieve itself there, then give praise as a reward.

  2. After the dog becomes familiar with the dog toilet and newspaper, when the dog shows a need to go, signal it to the dog toilet or newspaper and praise it promptly.

  3. Finally, gradually move the dog toilet (or newspaper) to the place you want it to go, such as outside or in the garden after six months. Training your dog to use the toilet requires patience and perseverance.

  3. Please master your dog’s usual relieving times, generally during these times:

  1. After waking up in the morning

  2. After playing

  3. After napping

  4. After eating
