How to Train a Corgi to Jump

For dogs, the action of "jumping" is quite intense. Before training, you should first recognize whether the breed of dog you are raising can handle it. For example, Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and Pekingese are not very suitable. Breeds such as Boston Terriers, Miniatures, and Terriers are more appropriate to avoid fractures or other problems.
For some dogs that are good at jumping, training them to "jump" is not difficult. Some dogs might have a large physique but are not good jumpers, such as Saint Bernards, which are not suitable for this kind of training. Consider it a form of training or even a challenge. If you treat it as a game, it will be much easier.
【Training Steps】
1. Find a low obstacle for both owner and dog to step over together while issuing the command "jump." Since the obstacle is very low, it is easy to get over.
2. Then, command the dog to stand on one side of the obstacle. The owner walks to the other side and calls "come, come." When the dog is about to jump over the obstacle, issue the "jump" command.
3. After the dog learns these commands, gradually increase the height of the obstacle. Practice several times a day and immediately praise the dog when it succeeds.
4. When the obstacle reaches a certain height, the dog might ignore the command and run around the obstacle instead. At this point, firmly say "No," and take the dog back to the original position to try again.
5. Use food or toys as bait to train the dog to jump in place.
6. You can also change the training from high jumps to long jumps. A drainage ditch or a wooden plank works great for this. Adapt to the material, but always consider the dog’s ability. You cannot realistically expect a Miniature breed to jump six feet like a German Shepherd.
