Difference 1: Coat
Maltese: Single-layer coat, no undercoat
Bichon Frise: Double coat, soft inner layer, curly outer layer, with a velvet feel to the touch

Maltese: Height and body length are equal, square-shaped
Bichon Frise: Body length is 1/4 longer than height, rectangular
