How to Stop a German Shepherd from Guarding Food

Training methods to correct food guarding:

  1. When feeding the German Shepherd, feed it from your hand

Delicious food or snacks should be fed from the palm of your hand. This feeding method is very safe; the German Shepherd will lick the food and won’t bite your hand. After the dog gets used to this, you can try holding the food bowl in your hand.

  2. Let the German Shepherd get used to having someone nearby while eating

When feeding it, first place your hand on its body. While gently stroking it, pour the food into its bowl. Do not stop stroking while the German Shepherd is eating. The actions should be gentle and slow; you can also talk to it to make it trust that you will not take its food. Don't rush the stroking; observe the dog's acceptance and proceed slowly. You may start by stroking the rear half of its body, and when it no longer resists, gradually move toward the head. This process may take several days to complete.

  3. After the German Shepherd adapts to someone being nearby and being stroked during meals, meaning it feels no threat,

start trying to take away the food bowl. Throughout the entire meal, if it shows signs of threat such as wrinkling its nose, growling, or glaring at people, loudly scold it and remove the food. When it calms down, praise and stroke it saying, "Good." Then give the food again. Repeat this continuously until it does not resist; then the job is done. (Source: PetsZone)
