This stubborn little Schnauzer old man, surprisingly has quite a few fans. Schnauzers are actually a type of terrier dog, with various body sizes. For dog owners wanting to buy a Schnauzer, how should they choose a Schnauzer?

How to Choose a Schnauzer

1. Observe the Schnauzer's coat and appearance:

We can gently stroke the little Schnauzer’s coat with our hand to check if the puppy has excessive dandruff; at the same time, if the fur is matted or has feces or other dirt stuck to it, then it certainly indicates that no one has specifically groomed the dog. It’s best not to choose such a Schnauzer.

Eyes: Carefully observe the Schnauzer puppy’s eyes: they should be lively, bright, and spirited.

Facial features: Check if the Schnauzer has nasal discharge or eye gunk, whether the ears are clean, and if the nose pad is moist.

Body: The body of a Schnauzer puppy should be well-developed, muscles should be well-developed and proportional, especially check if the puppy’s legs are straight and strong, and if there are any deformities.

2. Observe the health condition of other Schnauzers: In a litter of Schnauzers, do not only pay attention to the one you want to choose; also see if there are other sick dogs. If even one dog is sick, especially with bacteria, it is very likely other Schnauzers living together will get infected. So if you find one abnormal dog, you should seriously consider whether it is necessary to buy.

3. Whether the little Schnauzer is afraid of strange environments: When taking the small Schnauzer out, observe whether it shows the following situations: afraid of strangers, hesitant to move forward, or tail tucked, eyes flickering? If such situations occur, then this Schnauzer puppy will definitely have some difficulty adapting to new environments.

4. Has the Schnauzer puppy been vaccinated, and what vaccines? Vaccination is the only method to prevent dogs from viral diseases. Dogs without vaccinations have nearly 100% mortality if infected with viruses, and even survivors may bear lifelong sequelae. So it is crucial to pay attention to the vaccination status of Schnauzers.

Parents section—

1. Why pay attention to the dog mother and father?

1) It’s best to see a photo of the mother dog. Many recessive genes of puppies come from the mother. Seeing the mother can help you imagine what these puppies will look like when grown. Generally, the offspring won’t be bad. Except for rare regression or atavism phenomena.

2) Remember that purebred means both parents are of the same breed, more importantly depending on bloodline. Not only a good dog father is needed, but the quality of the mother is even more important. Male and female temperaments differ slightly; well-groomed puppies, whether male or female, are all very cute. Male dogs are slightly larger than females.

3) For example, bench Schnauzers, buck-toothed Schnauzers, rabbit-eared Schnauzers, etc., during growth there are often physical variations. This does not mean it is an impure Schnauzer, but rather a result of poor bloodline causing a vicious cycle in the puppies.

2. Schnauzer pricing: Schnauzers are a very cute breed. They don’t shed, have no body odor, are good-natured and straightforward, very intelligent and lively. If it is a higher quality Schnauzer, such as a show-grade one, the price will be higher, generally above 3000 yuan. Simply put: coat volume, bone structure, appearance, temperament, are how a relatively good Schnauzer is evaluated.

Prices generally remain around 1500 yuan. Females may be slightly more expensive. If both parents are show dogs with awards, the price will be higher. Specific pricing depends on the individual dog. Look at several breeders and compare well before making a choice.

3. Size and liveliness of a good Schnauzer

1) Choose Schnauzers about 3 months old. At this age, the body size can already roughly be seen, with a compact, square body and shoulder height preferred. Female dogs’ bodies can be slightly longer.

2) Liveliness: personality should be straightforward with a good temperament, bright and happy eyes, abundant coat, solid bone feel, giving a square and sturdy impression. Do not choose if too thin or coat is poor.

Puppy section—

1) Age: The best age for Schnauzer puppies is 2-3 months. At this time, the body is relatively healthy, but they have not yet developed many habits or problems like adult dogs. They are more malleable and easier to train.

2) Personality: When choosing Schnauzer puppies, select those sociable and not domineering. Also look for the more lively puppies.

3) Facial features: Healthy puppies’ eyes should be bright and clear. Also note that the nose should be clean and moist; the ear canal is clean pink; teeth should have a scissors bite, and gums and tongue appear healthy pink.

4) Body: Good Schnauzer puppies have strong bones, long neck, short back, high tail set, and parallel limbs preferred. Also, usually mini Schnauzer puppies have darker coat colors that lighten slightly as they grow. The area around the anus should be clean;

5) Appetite: A good Schnauzer puppy should have good appetite and strong activity, so it will grow up healthy.

6) Skull should be flat and muzzle length parallel. Coat texture should be coarse, volume abundant, and glossy.
